Activities in Gogama

Northern Ontario is known for its abundant lakes and rich wildlife which means there a plenty of opportunities to get outside and be immersed in nature. Whether you’re interested in fishing, hunting, gathering or off-roading through the woods, you’ll find it all in Gogama.

Out on the water:

Just steps from the motel, you can find Lake Miniskawa, which is a great large lake for boating, sea-dooing and other water sports. If you are looking for a quiet day out on the water, there are countless secluded lakes where you can cast your line and relax. With so many freshwater lakes, it is no wonder that Northern Ontario boasts some of the best fishing in all of Canada. These lakes are home to many different fish species, but the most common are: northern pike, walleye, and bass. If you’re interested in some friendly competition, try to beat some of my personal records.

Hunting in the wild:

Get ready for open season! Equipped with the appropriate licenses and tags, hunting season in the area is bound to be a success. Whether you are hunting black bear, moose, deer or small game, make sure you are up-to-date with all of the Ontario regulations.

Gathering:

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to gather some wild mushrooms. If you are well versed in your mushroom species, some freshly picked mushrooms can truly make an average dish stand out. It is important to note that you should not consume any mushrooms unless you are 100% sure you know what they are. Mushroom can be delicious, but there are many species that are dangerous and you must steer clear of such poisonous fungi.

The wild blueberry season in Gogama is not very long, but it sure is fruitful. Wild blueberries found on bushes throughout Gogama are much smaller than blueberries you will find in the supermarket, but they are twice as delicious. A great free source of vitamin C! We love to gather blueberries to snack on, but they are also great in pancakes, pies, smoothies and parfaits. My daughter makes a great blueberry sauce that goes great on just about anything. Pro tip: freeze your blueberries for a delightful snack year-round.

Winter Activities:

Winters in Gogama are cold and long, but that there are still lots of things to do! With plenty of snow covering the forests, Gogama is the perfect place to power up your snowmobile. The snowmobile used to be known as an emergency or work vehicle, but it has now become a popular recreational activity. There are many snowmobile clubs that offer routes for all types of riders. If you are new to snowmobiling, but would like to give it a try, we encourage you to check out Martin Lortz’ beginners guide to snowmobiling to get started. In Gogama, you can find groomed trails or go exploring off the beaten path, as long as you are equipped with a detailed map of the area. Stardust Motel is a great place to stay overnight if you find yourself snowmobiling long distances between Sudbury and Timmins. Since we are located right beside a gas station, you can fuel up your sled before continuing your journey on the snowy trails.

Just because the lakes are frozen, doesn’t mean you can’t go fishing. With the proper equipment, ice fishing is a great way to enjoy the outdoors during the winter months. Make sure to prepare yourself with these ice fishing safety tips and share photos of your experience!
